British Values




As a Catholic school, we aim to help the school community grow in accordance with the ideals of the Catholic Faith. We encourage all children to strive for personal excellence in all aspects of the curriculum which we hope will help children live out the Gospel values of their Christian lives.  


The DfE have recently reinforced the need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”


 The Government set out its definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy, and these values were reiterated in 2014. 


 At St Mary Magdalen’s Catholic Junior School we uphold and teach pupils about British Values which are defined as:

  • democracy
  • rule of law
  • individual liberty
  • mutual respect
  • tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs


We have achieved the following external accreditations which demonstrate evidence of our commitment to Gospel Values, including British Values:


  • Ofsted grade of ‘GOOD' (July 2014)
  • School Inspection by the Diocese of Westminster- grade of 'Very Good' (March 2013)


The school takes opportunities to actively promote these values through collective worship and whole school systems and structures such as electing and running a successful Student Council. We also actively promote these values through ensuring that our curriculum planning and delivery includes real opportunities for exploring these values.



Within our school each class has compiled a Rights & Responsibilities Charter. Children have identified what their rights are within the classroom. Through this they have developed an understanding of their responsibilities towards others.


We value the opinions of the pupils within our school. Pupils’ voices are heard through our Student Council, where members are voted in democratically by their peers. Regular meetings are held where children share their ideas and hopes for our school. Discussions are fed back to all classes by their representatives.

Examples of ideas that have been implemented through our Student Council are  healthier and fresh school dinners which are now cooked onsite, new playground markings and a weekly stationery shop.

Regular surveys are carried out on various topics throughout the school to enable all children to voice their views. These include, PE, Maths, PSHE and transportation.


The Rule of Law

 Our school follows the ‘traffic lights’ system, which is integral to our learning and expectations of behaviour.

Our expectations are clear and fair. Positive behaviour is regularly promoted and rewarded through the use of house points, green stickers and individual certificates.

Pupils are always helped to distinguish right from wrong, in the classroom, during assemblies and in the playground.

Pupils are encouraged to respect the law and St Mary Magdalen’s enjoys visits from authorities such as the Police, Fire Service, Transport for London, etc. to help reinforce this message. Other outside agencies, such as Ten Ten Productions and the Wizard Theatre have also enabled pupils to develop an awareness of the importance of making the right choices and accepting consequences.

The Behaviour and Anti-Bullying policies set out a zero tolerance baseline for any form of aggression, abuse or violence, which extends to pupils, staff and parents
and carers.  The Anti-Bullying Road Show visited our school to help children understand the effects of bullying, both on the individual and on the wider society.

Individual Liberty

Within school, pupils are actively encouraged, and given the freedom to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. eg. by signing up for extra-curricular clubs.

Pupils are supported to develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence.

Pupils are encouraged to take responsibility for their behaviour and our pastoral support reinforces the importance of making the right choices.

Pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and are advised how to exercise these safely, for example through our e-safety teaching and PSHE lessons.

Vulnerable pupils are protected and stereotypes challenged.  A strong anti-bullying culture is embedded in the school and any form of bullying is challenged and addressed. 

Pupils have key roles and responsibilities in school e.g. Year 6 Prefects, House Captains, Playground Pals, Behaviour Monitors, Anti-Bullying Steering Group, Student Council, ICT monitors etc.

Pupils fully support the Catholic ethos of the school and live out our Christian values by fundraising and bringing to the school community’s attention local, national and international causes for concern. For example, collections for our local homeless charity, donations to Children in Need, Books to Africa to name but a few.

Mutual Respect and Tolerance of Those with Different Faiths and Beliefs

Respect is one of the core values of our school.  The pupils know and understand the expectation that respect is shown to everyone, adults and children.

Pupils are helped to acquire an understanding of, and respect for, their own and other cultures and ways of life.

Staff and pupils are encouraged to challenge prejudicial or discriminatory behaviour.

Links and visits take place with local faith communities and places of worship. E.g. Members of different faiths or religions are invited to school to share their knowledge and enhance learning within assemblies and in class.

Through the PSHE and RE curriculum pupils are encouraged to discuss and respect differences between people, such as differences of faith, ethnicity, disability, gender and differences of family situations.

We offer a culturally rich and diverse curriculum in which other religions are studied and respected. These curriculum topics offer children the chance to reflect on our core Catholic and British values.
